Kiên Giang is determined to make tourism a key economic sector.

Set a goal to welcome more than 10 million visitors by 2025 with total revenue exceeding 13 trillion VND, Kien Giang is implementing professional, modern, sustainable tourism development projects in accordance with market economy laws and international integration.​

On the afternoon of October 31, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province held a conference to review the 5-year implementation of Plan No. 109 of the Provincial People's Committee regarding Resolution No. 03 of the Provincial Party Committee for the development of tourism until 2020 and direction towards 2030.
At the conference, Mr. Nguyễn Lưu Trung – Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee reported that the provincial government aims for tourism to become the leading economic sector by 2030, characterized by a synchronous and modern infrastructure system, diverse tourism products, branding, competitiveness, and strong cultural identity that is environmentally friendly and ensures national defense and security; significantly contributing to the province's economic development.
According to statistics, from 2018 to 2023, the province welcomed and served about 37 million tourist arrivals, including over 2 million international visitors, with revenue reaching 66 trillion VND, creating jobs for nearly 16,000 direct workers.

From 2018 until June 2023, the province attracted 50 tourism investment projects. As of now, the province has attracted 317 investment projects in tourism with a total area of over 9,600 hectares and total investment capital of over 372 trillion VND. Of these, 76 projects are operational with a total scale of more than 1,300 hectares and total investment exceeding 18 trillion VND; 81 projects are under construction with an estimated investment capital of nearly 195 trillion VND; and 160 projects are completing investment preparation procedures with an estimated investment capital of nearly 160 trillion VND.
At the conference, delegates affirmed that Kien Giang's tourism sector has demonstrated its role as a leading economic sector; confirmed its position and brand as a tourism destination worthy of regional and international recognition with numerous awards and accolades such as: attractive destination, emerging destination in Asia and the world, and the newest luxury resort in Asia…
However, delegates also pointed out several difficulties, limitations, and inadequacies, such as the policy system, management roles, and workforce for tourism development that do not meet requirements; effective inter-sector coordination is still low. The land clearance work for some projects is slow, and the key national highways through the province, as well as the connecting roads from the national highway to several tourist sites, are increasingly deteriorating, hindering the development of road tours connecting to Kien Giang.
Accommodation facilities are developing rapidly, but unauthorized construction and non-compliance with planning are complicated, especially in Phu Quoc. Some means of transport for tourists at sea are not fully complying with legal regulations. Beyond Phu Quoc, other key tourist localities are still struggling with detailed planning for the development of tourism areas and spots, making it difficult to attract investment.

Vice Chairman Nguyễn Lưu Trung requires all levels, sectors, and localities to identify tourism development as a key task and a long-term responsibility, focusing all resources to implement it with the highest determination and responsibility. It is important to clearly identify tourism as a comprehensive economic sector while also contributing positively to the restructuring of the economy and providing momentum for the development of other industries and sectors.
“Clearly define the responsibilities of each locality and unit in the organization of implementation; focus on promoting domestic tourism recovery, linked with international tourism activities; strive to develop tourism into a leading economic sector, create breakthroughs and significantly change the landscape and brand image of Kien Giang’s tourism, serving as a foundation and driving force for the province's socio-economic development,” emphasized Mr. Nguyễn Lưu Trung.
