For Hieu, at the end of October, the land of Kim Chi is a romantic autumn painting, as the leaves in some places have turned color.

Autumn in South Korea usually starts around September to November. This transitional period is highly anticipated by travelers, as the weather cools down, leading to changes in leaf colors. The ginkgo and maple trees turn yellow and red, creating a classic masterpiece of the land of Kim Chi.
During a work trip combined with tourism from Seoul to Busan (October 15 - 23), Nguyen Tran Hieu (27 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) and his group of friends stopped by several locations to admire the yellow and red leaves in South Korea.

The place with the most beautiful yellow and red leaf scenery for Hieu is the Hwadam Botanical Garden located in the Konjiam Resort in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do Province. The rows of ginkgo trees along the road have turned yellow, although not in large numbers and not yet vividly colored, but when combined with sunlight, they create a dreamy scene like a film.
The road from the parking lot to the Hwadam Forest is named "following the flowers." Walking while admiring the changing colors of the trees and listening to the trickling stream was indeed a perfect start to a meaningful autumn stroll.

In the central area of Hwadam Forest is a traditional hanok house surrounded by red maple trees and a blue lake, creating a "poetic" picture. In this hanok area, there are wine and tea shops for visitors to stop by and enjoy the warm flavors in the cool autumn weather.
However, visitors need to arrive early to buy tickets directly for admission because this is a famous destination in autumn in South Korea. The journey from Seoul to Hwadam Botanical Garden takes about two hours, Hieu said.

Along the path to the Promise Bridge, there is an area designated for couples with heart-shaped frames and love locks along the sides of the bridge. The yellow, red, and green colors of the leaves enhance the romantic scenery for lovers coming to the bridge with the hope of being together for life.

Leaving Seoul, on the way to Busan, Hieu's group bought KTX train tickets (high-speed train) to Gyeongju and stayed there for one night.
Gyeongju is a city located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, formerly the capital of the Silla dynasty, which lasted nearly 1,000 years (from 57 BC to 935) in Korea. Many historical, political, cultural, religious, and artistic relics here are recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage.
One of them is Bulguksa Temple. The temple has a long history spanning over 1,000 years since its establishment and is considered a masterpiece of architecture and art in Korea. In 1995, the temple was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site, according to the Korea Tourism Administration website in Vietnam.
The KTX train ticket from Seoul to Gyeongju costs about 50,000 won (about 900,000 VND). Tickets can be booked online or purchased directly at the counter, Hieu said.

On the way to the temple, there is a short section of about one meter where the leaves have turned yellow. In the temple grounds, most of the leaves are still green. "Some sections remind me of the pagodas I've visited in Hue," Hieu said.
In photos shared by a friend a year ago at this time, the leaves had changed color distinctly. It is expected that this year, the leaves will not turn color completely until early November.

Deep inside the temple is a palace reflecting on the surface of Wolji Lake. The maple and ginkgo trees by the lake have changed color, reflecting yellow and red hues onto the lake's surface. The yellow of the ginkgo leaves and the red of the maple intermingle with the green leaves, creating a colorful nature scene.
Around the lake are trails for visitors to walk and enjoy the beauty of this place during autumn.

The maple, ginkgo, cypress, and peach trees have been well-established in the temple grounds, resulting in beautiful shapes and abundant leaves. When they change color, the overlapping leaves create vibrant patches of deep red in a corner of the garden. The photo shows a maple tree in the temple garden.

There are three types of trees that display beautiful autumn foliage and are widely planted in South Korea: yellow-leaved ginkgo, red maple, and brown-leaved cypress.
Red maple is a temperate tree with a broad canopy. The leaves are quite thin, with sharp points like the petals of a star. The leaves change color in autumn as the weather turns cool and fall off in winter. Red maple is often at its most beautiful for about two weeks from the time the leaves change color.

Ginkgo is a tree that is quite common in South Korea. Its leaves are fan-shaped, leading many people to also call it the “fan tree.” In spring, clusters of leaves bloom, covering the mountainsides or street corners. In autumn, all ginkgo trees turn yellow and gradually drop their leaves within two weeks. In winter, the tree sheds all its leaves and fruit, leaving only bare branches to prepare for a new cycle.

In addition to the aforementioned places, Hieu's group also visited several other locations such as Hongdae, Myeongdong (Seoul), Jeonju Village (Jeonju), Jangtaesan Forest (Daejeon), Hwadam Garden (Gyeonggi-do), Gyeongju, and Busan. He noted that almost every place in South Korea is worth visiting in autumn.
The total cost of Hieu's trip is about 30 million VND. If spending frugally, around 23 million VND is enough to explore Seoul - Busan. Hieu mentioned that in South Korea, directional apps like those in Vietnam are not used; travelers need to research the routes and plan a specific itinerary in advance. Paying with international cards is more convenient than converting to Korean currency.
