The chairman of the travel platform Traveloka predicts that the Westlife concert in November in Ho Chi Minh City will continue to create waves for the music tourism trend.
The chairman of Southeast Asia's leading online travel platform Traveloka, Mr. Caesar Indra, stated that event-related tourism, particularly concerts , is one of the three trends shaping the Vietnamese tourism market in 2024.
After the effect of the Blackpink concert in Hanoi at the end of July, the Westlife concert taking place on November 21-22 in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to "create a strong wave for tourism in Ho Chi Minh City." According to Mr. Indra, event tourism offers great opportunities for the tourism industry, attracting a large proportion of young travelers. As the event date approaches, the number of customers booking services through the platform increases significantly.

Mr. Lê Trương Hiền Hòa, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Department, stated that the city is measuring the number of guests and revenue from accommodation, airlines, and travel services at the time of the Westlife concert. Mr. Hòa noted that the audience interested in this concert mainly consists of the 9X and 8X generation. This is different from the audience who were interested in the Blackpink concert, most of whom were Millennials and Gen Z.
Regarding the Westlife concert, the ticket sales portal opened at 9 a.m. on September 26. According to the organizers, after 30 minutes, about 30% of the tickets were sold out. Data from the Ticketbox website recorded that at noon, tickets ranging from 850,000 VND to a maximum price of 4 million VND were all sold out, only the 3.1 million VND category still had tickets available.
"The revenue from the Westlife concert could equal that of the concert in Hanoi last July, but it will have a positive impact on tourism in Ho Chi Minh City in the last months of the year," Mr. Hòa commented.
The Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Department stated that event-related tourism is one of the seven pillars of the city's tourism development. From mid-November to the end of the year is the peak time for events, with "events following events." This is also when the city's tourism revenue reaches its peak. Not only from the Westlife concert, but the city's tourism revenue during this time also comes from many other events like sports and cultural activities, Mr. Hòa said.
In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City continues to focus on developing event tourism. The city will compile a list of music, sports, and cultural events into a common event calendar to inform travel companies and enhance communication.
In September, Ho Chi Minh City received the "Top Asian Festival and Event Destination" award from the World Travel Awards 2023. The award also recognized Ho Chi Minh City's potential when it fulfills all the elements to explode and become one of the locations for hosting major international events.
During the two nights of the BlackPink concert, the total number of tourists coming to Hanoi was about over 170,000, contributing to tourism revenue of over 600 billion VND. The number of flight bookings to Hanoi at that time increased tenfold, according to estimates from the Hanoi Tourism Department.
